Unit 2 Chap 2: Institution of Slavery in North America

1. The greatest number of enslaved persons were sent to South America. 2. The Southern colonies had a plantation economy that relied on enslaved labor. 3. Georgia and South Carolina had the highest percentage of enslaved persons. 4. Enslaved workers resisted slavery by breaking tools, organizing rebellions, and attempting to escape.

5. While traveling during the Middle Passage, enslaved Africans had little space for themselves on the ship because the ship was packed tightly with other slaves. 6. Many slaves were confined in a small space while traveling on the ship during the Middle Passage.

7. The Portuguese were the first Europeans involved in the Atlantic Slave Trade. 8. Rum was bought and sold in the triangular trade.

9. The demand for enslaved workers was lower in the New England colonies than in the Southern colonies because growing conditions were poor in the New England colonies. 10. Enslaved Africans created and African American culture by combining elements from Africa and their new home.
